Mali Bucha is a digital extension of Mali Bucha: Dance Offering, a contemporary performance by Thai dance artist and choreographer Kornkarn Rungsawang. Inspired by Rum Kae Bon, a traditional Thai dance offering, the work explores how people express their wishes, devotion and gratitude to sacred beings through dance.

The name Mali Bucha brings together the ideas of flowers and worship. Mali refers to a flower or one adorned with flowers, while Bucha means to worship, venerate or make an offering. Together with Dance Offering, the name evokes a woman who expresses reverence and devotion through dance.

In Thai culture, Rum Kae Bon is more than a performance. It is a ritual practice through which people seek blessings, make promises and offer something in return when their wishes are fulfilled. Dance becomes a means of communication and exchange between the human world and the sacred.

Building on this tradition, Kornkarn reimagines this belief system through the convergence of traditional dance, sound, augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR). The dancer becomes a messenger between the physical and digital worlds, carrying the wishes and prayers of participants into an imagined digital shrine.

Flowers and animals become symbolic offerings, expressing hope, desire, faith and gratitude. Dance, in turn, becomes a gift offered in return when a wish is fulfilled—an act of thanksgiving to the sacred.

By bringing an enduring cultural practice into a digital environment, Mali Bucha explores how belief evolves across generations and how traditional rituals can find new forms of expression in the present and future.

The work invites us to reflect on the relationship between belief and technology, the visible and invisible, and the human desire to connect with something beyond ourselves.

About the Artist

Kornkarn Rungsawang is a Thai dance artist and choreographer whose practice bridges traditional Thai dance and contemporary performance. Drawing on movement traditions from royal court to folk forms, she explores how embodied knowledge can be reinterpreted through the body, contemporary life and new artistic languages.

In Mali Bucha: Dance Offering, Kornkarn investigates the relationship between ritual, spirituality and technology. Through dance, she becomes a mediator between participants and an imagined digital shrine, transforming personal wishes and prayers into movement and offering.

Her work invites audiences to reconsider traditional cultural practices not as fixed inheritances, but as living forms that can evolve and create new meanings across time and place.
